The mobile lab bringing digital fabrication to Cuenca villages
FabLab Itinerante is touring Cuenca province again with digital fabrication, creative electronics and a new programme focused on artificial intelligence.
Infrastructure can move too
FabLab Itinerante has started its 2026 route through the province of Cuenca. The project takes a mobile digital fabrication lab to municipalities that normally have less access to equipment, training and technology communities. This year’s programme includes creative electronics, digital fabrication and activities related to artificial intelligence.
The initiative began in 2021 and, according to FabLab Cuenca, has already visited more than 60 municipalities. The vehicle works as a learning and experimentation space that can spend a day in a square, a community centre or an educational facility. It does not only move machines from one place to another. Technical staff, materials, workshops and a learn-by-making approach travel with the equipment.
A distributed access model
The most interesting technical reading is the infrastructure model. A conventional lab concentrates 3D printers, electronics tools and specialist staff in one location. An itinerant format distributes access without requiring every municipality to maintain a permanent space and absorb the costs of equipment, maintenance and coordination.
That model reduces a barrier often missing from digitalisation debates. An Internet connection does not mean that people can experiment with technology. They also need devices, guidance and a context where they can test, fail and try again. Digital fabrication turns abstract concepts into objects and prototypes that can be inspected and changed.
From the workshop to the local economy
The project uses a STEAM methodology and offers activities for schools, associations, public administrations and communities. That combination expands what each visit can produce. A workshop may encourage a student to pursue a technical path, but it can also help identify local problems, teach a tool to a small business or connect people who continue the work afterwards.
The new AI activities add another layer. The value is not presenting a model as a magic solution, but giving people a practical view of its uses and limits. In rural areas, that conversation should include data quality, privacy, tool costs and the real ability to maintain a system after the workshop ends.
Technology needs continuity
Visiting more than 60 municipalities demonstrates reach, but long-term value depends on what happens between visits. Projects need documentation, local networks, access to tools and people who can continue learning. Mobility removes the first access barrier; the local community sustains the result.
FabLab Itinerante offers a useful way to think about rural innovation. It is not always necessary to build a large facility in every place. Sharing specialist resources, bringing them closer to the territory and creating conditions for knowledge to remain local can be more effective than an isolated demonstration.
